COVID-19 (more commonly referred to as the novel Coronavirus) is rapidly spreading throughout the known world. It’s the first global pandemic since the H1N1 (often called the Spanish Flu) pandemic of 1918. It’s quite the nasty, infectious bug.
How Does COVID-19 Spread?
Similar to other viral infections, there are two significant ways in which the Coronavirus spreads: through person-to-person contact, and contact with infected surfaces.
Spreading Coronavirus Through Person-To-Person Contact
Besides the obvious meaning of “person-to-person contact,” it can also refer to coming in contact with groups of people, even at a distance. In other words, if you enter a building, and someone infected coughs or sneezes, also if you’re more than ten feet away (the recommended person space distance) from the infected person, you can still face exposure to the virus.
Spreading COVID-19 Through Contact With Infected Surfaces
The second most common way for viruses (like COVID-19) to spread rapidly is through contact with infected surfaces. Infected surfaces include any surface touched by, or in the vicinity of, someone who has the virus. Surfaces that commonly harbor viral passengers include things like your keyboard, smartphone, computer mouse, door handles/knobs, toilet seats, faucets, and more.
What Can You Do To Prevent Exposure And Infection?
As with any other disease, the best way to avoid this virus is to avoid catching it in the first place. We know, that’s easier said than done. However, there are several things you can do to help prevent passing the virus from person to person and from surface to person. You can:
- Practice Safe Social Distancing – To practice safe social distancing, only venture out in public when absolutely necessary. Do your shopping online as much as possible. Avoid shaking people’s hands and venturing out to crowded areas. Don’t participate in public gatherings of 50 people or more. If you do have to venture out in public, make sure you leave a protective “bubble” of around 9 feet around yourself. If someone sneezes or coughs around you, cover your face and do your best to distance yourself from that person. And, if you’re at all sick, with anything, stay home from work. It’s not worth spreading this nasty disease to your coworkers, and doing so can reduce your company’s ability to perform work even further than you would have had you stayed home.
- Wash Your Hands And Face – Right now, good old-fashioned soap and water are your number one defense. Since the virus has a lipid outer “shell,” degreasing soaps dissolve said shell, killing the virus. Whenever you touch anything public, move to a different room, or use the restroom, wash your hands. Also, when washing your hands and face, make sure you lather up every square milometer of them and wash them for at least 20 seconds. If you need help timing it out, just sing the ABC song twice in your head.
Remember: Clean First, Sanitize Second
When washing your hands, face, and public surfaces, make sure you clean first and then sanitize after. For help remembering the difference between cleaning and sanitizing, you can think of cleaning as removing germs from a surface, and think of sanitizing as killing the contagions on a surface.
