Did you know that Bad Boys can be successful too? But, even if you’re a Bad Boy, you can learn Principle-Centered Leadership. Principle-Centered Leadership by Stephen R. Covey is an intelligent book that shows and teaches you the lifestyles of successful people in everyday life. This book shows eight different ways to be a more prosperous and powerful citizen: to learn continually, to be service-oriented, to radiate positive energy, to believe in other people, to lead a balanced life, to see life as an adventure, to be synergistic, and to exercise for self-renewal.
Continually Learn:
Don’t just learn what is taught to you in school, but go further and learn from life lessons. Every decision you make in life has consequences. Whether those consequences be good or bad, always learn from them. If you always think things through and take a moment to truly understand the situation, you will be a more successful person later in life. Start to ask questions and understand the importance of things and the things happening around you. Every decision is a reflection of you and those around you. Three simple ways to continually learn are:
- 1. Taking life lessons and applying them to everyday situations,
- 2. Reading or studying someone else’s experiences,
- 3. Take classes.
Service-Oriented Person:
This isn’t a job. It’s a journey. Service-oriented people are selfless. They feel great when they help someone other than themselves. A small gesture is all that it takes. Three different ways to express community service are:
- 1. Giving up time to help charitable organizations,
- 2. Focus on communicating with others,
- 3. Go out of your way to help others.
Radiate Positive Energy:
Being a positive spirit is a genuinely bright light in someone’s life. Three ways to radiate positive energy are:
- 1. The ability to make someone smile every single time they look or even think about you
- 2. Wake up every morning with the ability to say, “I am happy with who I am and that I am happy where I am today,”
- 3. The ability to go through all that life brings a positive outlook.
Believe In Others:
This conveys the amount of confidence you bestow in others. This one gesture defines the traits of a great leader. This involves trust. Giving others trust isn’t just knowing that they will not wrong you, but also NOT holding grudges against them if they fail. Nobody is perfect. Try to be the bigger person and show forgiveness. Three ways to convey this are:
- 1. Be aware of people’s weaknesses, rather than exposing that individual’s weakness,
- 2. Accept constructive criticism,
- 3. Don’t prejudge others.
Lead A Balanced Life:
Read, socialize, and be intellectually active. This creates a well-rounded and intelligent person who is an asset to society. This will help you NOT to become prone to addictions or a workaholic. Three ways to lead a balanced life are:
- 1. Be happy and enjoy life,
- 2. Be observant and,
- 3. Engage in family activities.
See Life As An Adventure:
Sometimes people think of life as a frustrating routine and a struggle to make it in the world. Think like an explorer. Three ways to see life as an adventure are:
- 1. Take road trips and travel to different cities,
- 2. Take a chance and do something wild and,
- 3. Have fun.
Be Synergistic:
Synergy is when the whole is more than its parts. Synergistic people are principle-centered people who make everything a little better. They always come out of a situation on top, partially because they are creative and find different ways to do things. By and large, they are hard workers who try to succeed in every way possible. Synergistic people strive for excellence and go above and beyond for every possible thing they can. They don’t rush and do the minimum but go further than that and do the maximum. Three ways to convey synergy are:
- 1. strive to do your best in everything,
- 2. try your hardest even if you fail, and
- 3. have an open mind.
Exercise Self-Renewal:
This involves four categories: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Physical exercise is as simple as taking a walk or jumping rope. Eating right will help your brain work a little faster. Mental training involves keeping your brain working. Read, study, or do puzzles. Vigorous exercise is maintaining a positive mood. Don’t put yourself down. This will benefit your sleeping habits, too. Lastly, spiritual practice is just as important as the rest. Go to church or a place to worship as a community, read spiritual works, or even meditate or pray. This is the journey to becoming a better you.
